ARC'TERYX - PRESENTING PARTNER AND AWARD WINNING CLOTHING!

20 JANUARY 2013

This year we are very excited to announce that the Presenting Partner of the 2013 UK and Ireland Banff Mountain Film Festival is Arc'teryx.

Arc'teryx have a strong reputation as an innovator in the outdoor industry, making high quality gear that enhances personal performance in the outdoors (only the very best for our audiences!). Recently, their Alpha SV Jacket was awarded the prestigious ISPO award for "outdoor apparel".

First appearing in 1998, the Alpha SV Jacket addressed the needs of climbers for outstanding weather protection without excess weight or compromised agility. Given the restless force behind the Arc'teryx design team to achieve the best possible combination of materials, construction and design, the time has come to revisit the standard.

Manufactured with a new GORE-TEX® face fabric, the Alpha SV Jacket is exceptionally durable and supple. The new N80p-X fabric meets Arc'teryx' high standards for abrasion resistance and waterproof/breathable performance while being supple, quiet and 10% lighter than the former fabric. The total weight of the jacket dropped from 541 grams to 491 grams without losing any of the details or ruggedness of the legendary Alpha SV.

The 2013 UK and Ireland Banff Mountain Film Festival grand prize is an Alpha SV jacket. You can enter at the screenings for free just by entering our nightly prize draws. Somebody is going to be very lucky indeed…...

AN INTERVIEW WITH GARRY WEARE - WORLD EXPEDITIONS TOUR LEADER

15 JANUARY 2013

Since 1975 World Expeditions has worked with many leaders who are recognised experts, elite adventurers, or mountaineers.  Garry Weare, a Himalaya expert, and author of Lonely Planet guidebook "Trekking the Indian Himalaya" is one of those leaders

How did you get into trekking?
I first visited Kashmir in 1970 originally to teach at a local college but I was soon side-tracked into the mountains and have been going up and down hill ever since.

Who was your greatest inspiration?
The 19th century British travellers who would head off in the Himalaya for months at a time have always inspired me. They would live off the land and forge friendships with the local crews and villagers and cross high snow bound passes with little more than a dry biscuit and a tot of rum to fortify their resolve.

What is it about adventure travel that fascinates you?
The adventure experience - whether defined by activity or by simply visiting a remote destination - has always fascinated me. In particular how group members who join me on treks react to being in a completely different, and sometimes challenging environment for days or weeks at a time. For some, being in the Himalaya can be a life-changing experience, for others it's an opportunity to reflect on their own lifestyle and values.

Do you have any advice for wannabe adventure travellers?
Don't take on too much to begin with. Start by focusing on an adventure or trek that is within your comfort zone and take things literally one step at a time.
